POND ALGAE CONTROL (DOCX - 14.4 KB)

EXCESS ALGAE GROWTH IS A COMMON PROBLEM IN PONDS.

-Mechanical and Chemical Methods are not always effective or economical.

-Use of barley straw is extremely successful in naturally controlling algae problems, when applied correctly.

-Barley straw does not kill existing algae but inhibits the growth of new algae.

-Barley straw does not reduce the growth of other aquatic plants....it may actually allow aquatic plant growth, as the plants have less competition from the algae.

-Barley straw is most effective when applied before algae appears on ponds (fall through early spring).

-Barley straw is effective in as little as 1-2 wks and remains effective for approximately 6 months.

-2 or 3 bales per surface acre of pond.  (Excessive amounts may kill fish because straw deoxygenates the water as it decays.)
